CARDIOVASCULAR DIAGNOSTICS
A NEW AGE IS DAWNING
Cardiovascular
diseases -- including heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, hypertension
and a host of other conditions -- are by far the biggest killers in the
industrialized world, accounting for nearly half of all deaths. In
the U.S. alone, at least $150 billion is spent annually on treating cardiovascular
diseases.
Despite these staggering figures, in vitro diagnostics
(IVDs) for cardiovascular diseases have long been a minor part of the picture.
By one estimate, cardiovascular IVDs account for less than 3% of the world
IVD market. Cardiovascular diseases typically haven't lent themselves to
diagnosis via blood markers. Moreover, the cumbersome existing diagnostic
tools were considered adequate in an era when treatments for heart attacks
and strokes were largely limited to prevention and supportive care. Clinicians
could be content to wait hours for a definitive diagnosis.
But all this is changing. This ground-breaking
report tells you why and how.
